What Fuels You: Electric vs Hybrid vs Clean Diesel

What Fuels You

Image

With higher gas prices and focus being placed on a greener environment, many people are starting to look for alternatives to their conventional gas vehicles, well you are in luck because now-a-days there are many options for you.

Electric

Electric cars are still relatively new to the market, but with more and more vehicles like the Nissan Leaf and Fiat 500e coming out, the technology is improving while prices are coming down.   Electric cars are very environmentally friendly and use no gas, only electric from your home or local charging station.  They seem to be reliable (time will tell for sure as they are relatively new) and with current tax rebate incentives, are much more affordable then you may think.  The one downside to an all-electric vehicle is the lack of charging stations currently available right now, and the limited range of the vehicle.   With most models earning between 50 to 100 miles on a single charge, you will need to make sure you know where a station is at, or that you can get home.   Also environment factors, such as cold and altitude can have an effect on battery consumption and life.

Hybrid

Hybrids have been around for a little bit longer then all-electric vehicles and have proven their reliability.   Also, they aren’t restricted to just being charged, as they also use conventional fuel to drive, and have a much larger range.  You will still have to fill up at the pumps but it will be less often, and with it also being run by electric, you will be more environmentally friendly then a traditional vehicle.   Tax rebate incentives are also available on hybrid vehicles which lessen the additional costs but the one downside is the battery pack, which generally has a warranty for 8 to 10 years, being on average $3,000 to replace.  Now it is believed that as these batteries are produced on a higher level and improved technology will drive the price down, you also want to be ready in case it stays at that price.

Diesel

One option that is highly overlooked is a diesel engine.   Diesels have been around since the 1930’s and are highly favored to be one of the most durable, long lasting engines available.   They also provide your vehicle with more torque and better gas mileage by generally 30%.   Now the downside is that they are more expensive then a conventional vehicle but they are also typically less then a hybrid or electric vehicle.   They also have a reputation for being loud and smelly but improved diesel technology has helped in both areas.   The one main disadvantage is not all gas stations have diesel fuel so you may have to drive a little out of your way to fill up, depending on where you live.
